Melissa Barrett’s practice focuses on federal and state mortgage lending law. A significant portion of Ms. Barrett’s practice involves advising large corporations on licensing and compliance issues in the areas of commercial and residential mortgage lending and brokerage. In connection with this practice, Ms. Barrett assists the firm’s clients with all aspects of state licensing, regulatory compliance and responding to examinations. She drafts and reviews mortgage documentation and disclosures, advises clients on interest rate and fee limitations, and negotiates with regulators on behalf of clients. Ms. Barrett also advises thrift and banking clients on federal preemption issues and assists them with state and federal licensing and regulatory compliance issues. Ms. Barrett has worked extensively with banking clients on developing and documenting home equity line of credit and other retail banking products.
Ms. Barrett is Vice President and a board member of Transitional Housing Corporation, a nonprofit corporation that provides transitional and affordable housing to homeless families in the District of Columbia. She is also a past president and a former board member of Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington, a nonprofit organization that helps homeless people with employment, housing and other issues.
Ms. Barrett was Associate Editor for The Tax Lawyer at Georgetown University Law Center from 1979-1982. She received a Diplôme Supérieur de L'Université from the Paris University Law School in 1983, a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in1982 and B.A. from Middlebury College in 1977 (cum laude).
