Firm Overview - Pro Bono
BuckleySandler has a strong commitment to public service and encourages all of its lawyers to participate in pro bono work. The Firm’s pro bono practice focuses on providing legal services to economically disadvantaged individuals as well as to non-profit organizations in our surrounding communities and throughout the United States. Our lawyers represent clients pro bono in civil and criminal matters before state and federal trial and appellate courts, in administrative hearings, in alternative dispute resolution proceedings, and frequently appear as amicus curiae in significant matters.
BuckleySandler pro bono representations involve a wide variety of subject areas that reflect the diverse interests of our attorneys, including fair housing, landlord/tenant, civil rights and civil liberties, education, family law, international human rights, immigration and asylum, employment, police misconduct, environmental law, intellectual property, veterans benefits, elder law, social security, sports law, nonprofit incorporation, and tax.
BuckleySandler’s institutional support of pro bono activities is underscored by the Firm’s creation of a pro bono foundation, chaired by a member of the Firm’s Executive Management Committee, to provide funding and leadership for the pro bono and community service initiatives undertaken by BuckleySandler lawyers.
In addition to serving as pro bono counsel, BuckleySandler lawyers are public service leaders in the communities in which they live and work and across the United States. These public service roles include serving as members of governing bodies of major universities and social and community service organizations. For example, the Firm’s Co-Managing Partner serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, a nonprofit organization that represents individuals and groups with discrimination claims in a broad range of civil rights cases involving employment, housing, public accommodations, and other aspects of urban life, assists immigrants seeking asylum and other help, and works for education reform in the DC public schools. In addition, the Firm’s Co-Chair and another BuckleySandler partner founded the Financial Literacy Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, which provides financial management courses in areas including budgeting, banking, wise use of credit, and wealth building strategies to high school students in underserved communities.
